Our smoke alarm installation services

At Limelight Electrix, doing things properly and safely is our priority, which is why we always conduct thorough safety assessments to ensure optimal placement and operation of your smoke alarms.

  • Hardwired smoke alarms

Connected to the home’s mains electricity and generally include a backup battery so they can continue operating during a power outage.

  • Sealed 10-year lithium battery

There’s no annual 9V battery change, although the entire alarm still needs replacing at the end of its specified lifespan.

  • Interconnected smoke alarms

When one alarm detects smoke, all connected alarms sound. This is particularly useful in larger and multi-storey homes where an alarm sounding elsewhere may otherwise be difficult to hear.

What’s involved in installing or replacing smoke alarms?

  • Check your existing smoke alarms

We start by checking what’s already installed, including the type, location, age and condition of your existing alarms. If you’re replacing older alarms, we can determine what needs to be upgraded rather than simply swapping them like-for-like.

  • Work out what your home needs

The number, type and positioning of smoke alarms can depend on the property and the work being undertaken. We’ll assess your home and determine an appropriate setup based on applicable requirements.

  • Position the alarms correctly

Smoke alarms need to be installed in suitable locations to provide effective warning. We consider the layout of your home, bedrooms, storeys and surrounding features before determining where each alarm should go.

  • Remove and replace old alarms

If we’re upgrading existing smoke alarms, the old units are carefully removed and the new alarms installed. Where possible, we’ll also aim for a neat finish without leaving unnecessary holes or marks around the installation.

  • Install and interconnect where required

Depending on the system, alarms may be mains-powered and interconnected so that when one alarm detects smoke, the other connected alarms also sound. We’ll take care of the necessary electrical work and make sure everything is properly connected.

  • Test every alarm

Installation isn’t finished until the system has been tested. We check the operation of the new alarms and, where applicable, confirm that interconnected alarms communicate and activate as intended.

  • Don’t sleep on smoke alarm safety

Smoke alarms are there to alert you when you may be least aware of danger. Make sure yours are correctly installed, appropriately positioned and ready to respond when they’re needed.

  • When did you last think about your smoke alarms?

If the answer is “I can’t remember”, now might be a good time. Smoke alarms need ongoing testing and eventually replacement to help ensure they continue operating as intended.

  • Don’t wait for the chirp

A low-battery chirp might get your attention, but it shouldn’t be the only time you think about your smoke alarms. Regular testing and timely replacement are important parts of keeping them ready for an emergency.

  • One alarm sounds. They all sound.

Interconnected smoke alarms are designed so that when one detects smoke, the other connected alarms also activate. That can provide valuable additional warning, particularly in larger or multi-storey homes.

  • Smoke alarms have an expiry date too

Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Their sensors and components age over time, which is why alarms should be replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended service life and applicable requirements.

    • This company ticks all the boxes. They are professional, knowledgeable, timely, good communicators, friendly, tidy, etc. No, they are not the least expensive option you’ll find out there, but you will most definitely get your money’s worth. They do the job right the first time, use top-notch products and do it all with a smile.  Brad and his team are worth it!

Brad and Levi’s workmanship is thorough and safety is paramount for them. I was extremely impressed that Brad did a safety check as the first thing at the quoting stage.

Brad and Levi are honest and open if you have any follow up queries.
I have already passed on Limelight Electrix details to a family member and wouldn’t hesitate to give their details to anyone who was after a superior Electrician. More than highly recommended!!

    • Would highly recommend Brad and his team for any electrical work.  We have just used Limelight again to complete a variety of work at our recently purchased house, this will be about the fifth time we have used them and every time we cannot fault Brads work.

Whilst you may find cheaper quotes, you won’t find better quality – something we weren’t willing to comprise when dealing with electricity, not to mention presentation of our house.  We had one minor hiccup with a phone line, they were straight back out to resolve it at no cost.  They always call on the way to the job and stick to the agreed times.

      Frequently asked questions

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Many alarms have a recommended service life of around 10 years, after which the entire unit should be replaced, not just the battery.

Check the manufacturer’s information on your existing alarm or have an electrician assess it if you’re unsure how old it is.

How can I tell how old my smoke alarm is?

Smoke alarms will commonly have manufacturing or replacement information printed on the unit.

This may require removing the alarm from its mounting to see the label.

If you’ve moved into an older property and have no idea when the alarms were installed, we can inspect them and determine whether replacement should be considered.

Do smoke alarms need to be hardwired in WA?

Requirements depend on the property and circumstances, including whether it is a new home, an existing property being sold or rented, or a property undergoing certain building work.

If you’re unsure what applies to your home, Limelight Electrix can assess the existing alarms and advise what is required.

What type of smoke alarm should I install?

Photoelectric smoke alarms are generally the appropriate choice for residential installations in Western Australia.

However, the alarm itself is only part of the equation. Its power source, positioning and whether alarms need to be interconnected should also be considered.

      What are interconnected smoke alarms?

Interconnected alarms communicate with each other so that when one detects smoke, the other connected alarms also sound.

This can be particularly valuable in larger or multi-storey homes, where a fire starting some distance from a bedroom may otherwise take longer to alert sleeping occupants.

Can you just replace my existing smoke alarms?

Yes. If your existing alarms are approaching the end of their service life or need upgrading, we can remove them and install suitable replacements.

We’ll also check the existing setup rather than automatically assuming that replacing each alarm in exactly the same position is the best approach.

What's the difference between a hardwired and battery smoke alarm?

A hardwired smoke alarm receives its primary power from the home’s electrical supply and typically incorporates battery backup.

Battery-powered alarms rely on a battery as their power source, with some modern models incorporating sealed long-life batteries.

What is appropriate will depend on the property and applicable requirements.

How often should I test my smoke alarms?

Smoke alarms should be tested regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable guidance.

Testing only takes a moment and helps confirm that the alarm can activate when needed.

Why use an electrician to replace smoke alarms?

Beyond physically installing the alarm, an electrician can assess the existing electrical setup, alarm locations and interconnection and identify issues that might otherwise be overlooked.
