Our RCD & Safety Switch installation services

Our licensed father–son team uses the latest testing equipment to pinpoint the exact cause of your electrical issue. From tripping RCDs and faulty wiring to damaged circuits or overloaded systems.

  • RCD replacement

If an existing safety switch is faulty, damaged, ageing or fails the appropriate testing, we can replace it with a suitable new device and test the circuit afterwards.

  • Switchboard RCD upgrades

If an older switchboard doesn’t have the space, configuration or equipment required for modern RCD protection, we can assess whether alterations or a more comprehensive switchboard upgrade are needed.

  • Additional circuit protection

Adding a new circuit for an air conditioner, oven, power points, outdoor equipment or other electrical installation may also require appropriate circuit and RCD protection. We can take care of this as part of the new electrical work.

What’s involved in installing or replacing smoke alarms?

  • Check your existing protection

We start by inspecting your switchboard to see what circuit protection and safety switches are already installed. This allows us to identify which circuits have RCD protection and whether anything needs upgrading.

  • Assess your electrical system

Not every switchboard or electrical installation is the same. We consider the existing circuits, switchboard configuration and condition of the equipment before determining what work is required.

  • Select the appropriate RCD protection

The correct protective devices need to be selected for the circuits and electrical installation they’re protecting. We’ll determine the appropriate solution rather than simply adding another switch to the board.

  • Safely isolate the electrical supply

Before installation begins, the relevant electrical supply is safely isolated so work can be carried out on the switchboard.

  • Install or upgrade the safety switches

The required RCD protection is installed and integrated neatly into your existing switchboard. Depending on the age and condition of the board, additional alterations or upgrades may sometimes be required to accommodate the new equipment.

  • Check the details behind the cover

This is another job where the most important workmanship isn’t necessarily visible once we’re finished. Connections, cable management, circuit identification and the quality of the installation all matter.

  • Test the RCDs

Once installed, the safety switches and relevant circuits are tested to verify that the protection is operating correctly. We don’t consider the job finished simply because everything switches back on.

  • A switch you hope never has to save you

Safety switches are designed to respond when an electrical fault creates a risk of electric shock. It’s a small device performing an incredibly important job in the background.

  • Don’t assume you’re protected

Seeing circuit breakers inside your switchboard doesn’t necessarily tell you everything about the protection provided to each circuit. We can inspect your switchboard, identify your existing RCD protection and recommend upgrades where required.

  • Is your switchboard keeping up?

Electrical safety requirements and the way we use electricity at home have changed considerably over the years. If you have an older switchboard, we can assess its existing protection and determine whether an upgrade is appropriate.

  • Because electrical faults don’t send invitations

You can’t predict when an appliance, cable or electrical component might develop a fault. Appropriate RCD protection provides an important additional safeguard when something unexpectedly goes wrong.

  • Installed properly. Tested properly.

Installing an RCD is only part of the job. Appropriate testing helps verify that the device and electrical installation are operating correctly before we consider the work complete.

    • This company ticks all the boxes. They are professional, knowledgeable, timely, good communicators, friendly, tidy, etc. No, they are not the least expensive option you’ll find out there, but you will most definitely get your money’s worth. They do the job right the first time, use top-notch products and do it all with a smile.  Brad and his team are worth it!

    • Brad is brilliant with his prompt communication and punctuality.
Brad and Levi’s workmanship is thorough and safety is paramount for them. I was extremely impressed that Brad did a safety check as the first thing at the quoting stage.

Brad and Levi are honest and open if you have any follow up queries.
I have already passed on Limelight Electrix details to a family member and wouldn’t hesitate to give their details to anyone who was after a superior Electrician. More than highly recommended!!

    • Would highly recommend Brad and his team for any electrical work.  We have just used Limelight again to complete a variety of work at our recently purchased house, this will be about the fifth time we have used them and every time we cannot fault Brads work.

Whilst you may find cheaper quotes, you won’t find better quality – something we weren’t willing to comprise when dealing with electricity, not to mention presentation of our house.  We had one minor hiccup with a phone line, they were straight back out to resolve it at no cost.  They always call on the way to the job and stick to the agreed times.

      Frequently asked questions

What is an RCD or safety switch?

An RCD (Residual Current Device), commonly called a safety switch, is designed to quickly disconnect the electricity supply when it detects certain types of current leakage.

This provides an important additional layer of protection against electric shock.

Is an RCD the same thing as a safety switch?

In residential electrical work, the terms are often used interchangeably.

RCD is the technical term for the protective device, while “safety switch” is the term most homeowners are familiar with.

What's the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

They protect against different electrical risks.

A circuit breaker is primarily designed to protect wiring and electrical circuits against overloads and short circuits.

An RCD is designed to provide additional protection against electric shock caused by certain types of electrical faults.

Modern RCBOs can combine both functions in a single device.

      What is an RCBO?

An RCBO combines residual-current protection and overcurrent protection in one device.

This allows an individual circuit to have protection against certain electrical leakage faults as well as overloads and short circuits.

How do I know if my home has safety switches?

Take a look at your switchboard. RCDs and RCBOs will generally have a test button and identifying information on the device, but it isn’t always obvious to a homeowner which circuits are protected.

Limelight Electrix can inspect your switchboard and identify exactly what protection you currently have.

Does every circuit need RCD protection?

The requirements depend on the electrical installation and the work being carried out.

Modern electrical installations have broader RCD protection requirements than many older homes were originally built with.

If you’re unsure about your property, we can assess your existing switchboard and advise what upgrades may be required.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

There are numerous possible causes, including a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, an electrical fault or an issue with the protective device itself.

If an RCD repeatedly trips, continually resetting it isn’t a solution.

Fault finding can help identify what’s actually causing the problem.

How do I work out which appliance is tripping my safety switch?

Sometimes an individual appliance can be identified as the cause, but repeated RCD tripping can also indicate a problem with the fixed electrical installation.

If the cause isn’t obvious, particularly if the RCD won’t reset, it’s best to have the problem investigated by a licensed electrician.

How often should I test my safety switches?

Safety switches should be tested periodically using their test button in accordance with applicable guidance and the manufacturer’s instructions. If you’re unsure how to test yours or an RCD doesn’t operate as expected during testing, have it checked by a licensed electrician.
