  • Switchboard Safety Check

At Limelight Electrix, safety is paramount. That’s why we conduct a thorough switchboard safety check with every job we attend. This routine inspection helps in identifying and rectifying potential electrical hazards, maintaining the integrity and safety of your home’s electrical infrastructure.

What’s involved in upgrading your
switchboard?

A switchboard upgrade service that’s prioritises safe and compliance from the very start.

  • Assess your home’s electrical needs

We review the circuits supplying your home and consider the electrical demands of your appliances, air conditioning, lighting, power points and any future upgrades you may be planning.

  • Inspect the existing switchboard

We begin by assessing the condition, age and layout of your current switchboard. This includes checking the existing protection devices, available space, wiring condition and any visible signs of damage, overheating or deterioration.

  • Recommend the right upgrade

Based on the inspection, we explain what needs to be replaced or improved and recommend a switchboard configuration suited to your property. This may include replacing ceramic fuses, adding modern circuit protection or allowing room for future circuits.

  • Safely isolate the power

Before work begins, the electrical supply is safely isolated so the existing switchboard components can be removed and the upgrade carried out.

  • Replace outdated equipment

Older fuses, circuit protection and other outdated components are replaced as required with modern equipment. The switchboard itself may also need to be replaced or reorganised to provide adequate space and a clean, compliant installation.

  • Upgrade circuit protection

Appropriate modern circuit and safety protection is installed in accordance with applicable requirements. This is one of the biggest reasons for upgrading an older switchboard, helping provide better protection against electrical faults and electric shock.

  • Test the electrical installation

Once the upgrade is complete, the relevant circuits and protective devices are tested to make sure everything is operating correctly and safely before the installation is returned to service.

  • Label, tidy and walk you through it

We clearly identify the circuits, tidy the work area and explain the new switchboard so you know what has changed and where everything is.

  • Upgrade before problems develop

Heat damage, overcrowded wiring and ageing components can become serious safety concerns if left unaddressed. An inspection and timely upgrade can help identify and resolve issues before they worsen.

  • Your home has changed. Has your switchboard?

Air conditioning, induction cooktops, home offices, pools and countless appliances can place very different demands on a home than when it was first built. A switchboard upgrade can help prepare your electrical system for the way you live today.

  • Old switchboard. New expectations.

An older switchboard may have been perfectly adequate when it was installed, but electrical standards, safety protection and household power requirements have moved on. We can assess what you have and recommend an appropriate upgrade.

  • From old-school fuses to modern protection

If your switchboard still relies on older-style fuses or outdated equipment, it may be time for an assessment. We can replace ageing components as required and provide a modern, clearly labelled and professionally finished switchboard.

They are professional, knowledgeable, timely, good communicators, friendly, tidy, etc. No, they are not the least expensive option you’ll find out there, but you will most definitely get your money’s worth. They do the job right the first time, use top-notch products and do it all with a smile.  Brad and his team are worth it!

Brad and Levi’s workmanship is thorough and safety is paramount for them. I was extremely impressed that Brad did a safety check as the first thing at the quoting stage.

Brad and Levi are honest and open if you have any follow up queries.
I have already passed on Limelight Electrix details to a family member and wouldn’t hesitate to give their details to anyone who was after a superior Electrician. More than highly recommended!!

    • Would highly recommend Brad and his team for any electrical work.  We have just used Limelight again to complete a variety of work at our recently purchased house, this will be about the fifth time we have used them and every time we cannot fault Brads work.

Whilst you may find cheaper quotes, you won’t find better quality – something we weren’t willing to comprise when dealing with electricity, not to mention presentation of our house.  We had one minor hiccup with a phone line, they were straight back out to resolve it at no cost.  They always call on the way to the job and stick to the agreed times.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

There isn’t one single sign that means a switchboard needs replacing.

Older ceramic fuses, ageing components, limited circuit protection, visible damage, overcrowding or a lack of room for additional circuits can all be reasons to have it assessed.

If you’re unsure what you have, Limelight Electrix can inspect your switchboard and explain whether an upgrade is actually necessary.

      Is an old switchboard dangerous?

Not every old switchboard is automatically unsafe, but older installations may not provide the same level of protection expected from a modern electrical system.

Components can also deteriorate over time. If you have an older fuse box or you don’t know when your switchboard was last inspected, it’s worth having a licensed electrician take a look.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

They provide protection against different electrical risks.

Circuit breakers are primarily designed to protect electrical circuits against problems such as overloads and short circuits, while RCD safety switches are designed to reduce the risk of electric shock.

Modern switchboards can incorporate appropriate protection for the circuits within your home.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard before installing an EV charger?

Possibly. EV chargers can represent a significant additional electrical load, so your electrician needs to assess your existing supply, switchboard capacity and other electrical demands before installation.

In some homes the existing setup will be suitable, while others may require alterations or an upgrade.

Will upgrading my switchboard stop the power from tripping?

It depends on why it’s tripping. Repeated tripping can be caused by an overloaded circuit, faulty appliance, wiring problem or another electrical fault.

Rather than assuming the switchboard is the problem, we can carry out fault finding to determine what’s actually causing it.

Can you add more circuits while upgrading the switchboard?

Depending on the installation, yes. If you’re already planning other electrical improvements, it makes sense to discuss them at the same time.

We can consider future requirements when planning the new switchboard rather than only thinking about what your home needs today.

Should I upgrade my switchboard before installing solar or a home battery?

      It’s worth having it assessed.

Solar and battery installations can introduce additional equipment and switchboard requirements.

Looking at the bigger picture beforehand can help ensure your electrical system is properly prepared for the upgrade you have planned.
